Greenfield is the county seat for Franklin County. Located at the confluence of the Green, Deerfield and Connecticut Rivers, as well as two rail lines, it developed as a trade center, first settled in 1686. The town was incorporated in 1753 and governed by town council until 2003, when it revised its charter to become a city, governed by a mayor.
In the 1800’s, Greenfield was the site of the nation’s first cutlery factory. The rivers were used to supply power to saw, grist and woolen mills and many of the brick buildings in the downtown area date from this period.
